LONDON — Arthur Fery reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final after defeating Adrian Mannarino with a score of 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 at the HSBC Championships in London. Fery, the 23-year-old British number five, received a wildcard to enter the tournament at Queen's.
Fery advanced to the second round by defeating Toby Samuel earlier in the tournament. During his match against Mannarino on Andy Murray Arena, Fery received treatment for a nosebleed at the start of the second set.
Fery commented on the nosebleed, stating, "It happens to me quite often. I'm used to it." He added that he was unsure of the cause, saying, "I don't really know why it happens. Maybe nerves. Sometimes tiredness, the heat. I don't know. It happens here and there."
Fery described his quarter-final appearance as a career highlight. "This is the best result of my career so far," Fery said. He also noted the significance of playing in his home country. "It's special to be playing in London where I grew up and in front of all these British tennis fans."
Former British number one John Lloyd said, "I see no reason why he can't be top 50." Lloyd also commented on Fery's playing style, saying, "He's quick, nasty to play against, he moves well, isn't afraid to change it up with the slice, and he likes the big stage." Fery is currently ranked 140 in the world, while Mannarino is ranked 44.
Fery is scheduled to play Francisco Cerundolo on Friday. Cerundolo, the seventh seed, defeated Jenson Brooksby in straight sets to advance. In a separate event, Billy Harris progressed in the men's Challenger event at Nottingham.
