Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Sproat exited his start against the Cleveland Guardians in the fourth inning due to a right hamstring cramp. Brewers manager Pat Murphy and Sproat indicated that he is not expected to miss any time.
Sproat left the game after throwing an 0-1 pitch for a ball to Steven Kwan. Brewers head athletic trainer Brad Epstein went to the pitcher's mound to check on Sproat. Chad Patrick replaced Sproat in the bullpen, and Grant Anderson later closed the game for the Brewers.
Murphy stated that Sproat's condition was a cramp. "It's just a cramp," Murphy said. "He was fine. He'll be able to make his next start."
Sproat said the cramp developed during the fourth inning. "The whole fourth inning, whenever my back leg would swing around, that hamstring wanted to cramp up on me," Sproat said. He attempted to continue pitching, but the condition worsened. "Trying to push through it, and it just kind of got worse as I kept going on," he added. Sproat confirmed he would not miss his next start after being checked by trainers. "But we went and got it checked out with the trainers and stuff like that, and I'm not going to miss any time," he said.
Through the first three innings, Sproat retired nine consecutive batters. In the fourth inning, he allowed two walks and a single to the first three batters. Rhys Hoskins then struck out before Daniel Schneemann hit a grand slam. Sproat retired David Fry on a pop fly before his departure during Kwan's at-bat. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 9-4.
