SAN DIEGO — Phil Mickelson resigned from his membership at The Farms Golf Club near San Diego following an internal investigation into claims of unwanted physical contact with a staff member. Reports stated that a female employee alleged Mickelson made nonconsensual physical contact with her inside the clubhouse, rejected the alleged advances, and informed her supervisors.
The Farms Golf Club stated, "Following a staff member report of member misconduct, the club provided immediate and ongoing support to the staff member, conducted a thorough independent investigation of the incident and took decisive action." The club added, "This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club." Reports further indicated that club management confronted Mickelson on the course during his round and asked him to leave the property.
Mickelson's spokesperson said, "Any misunderstanding has been cleared up." The spokesperson also stated that Mickelson has not been accused of any crime in relation to the incident. Tom Clare is Mickelson's lawyer. The spokesperson added, "Phil continues to attend to a family health matter and is uncertain when he will be able to return to professional golf." Mickelson cited a family health issue for his withdrawals from both the Masters and the PGA Championship this year.
Mickelson is not eligible to compete in the U.S. Open this year after exhausting his exemptions. In 2021, he won the PGA Championship at age 50, making him the oldest major champion in golf history. Mickelson also helped launch the LIV Golf circuit. He is 55 years old.
No independent assessment of Phil Mickelson’s claims was available.
