CHICAGO — Amtrak's California Zephyr sleeper cabin prices range from $400 for a roomette on a 15-hour Denver to Salt Lake City trip in January 2025 to $2,200 for a bedroom on a 53-hour Chicago to Emeryville journey in February 2026. The California Zephyr is a double-decker Superliner train that runs between Chicago and Emeryville, California.

The train route includes coach cars with regular seating and sleeper cars with private cabin accommodations: roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, larger family-sized bedrooms, and accessible bedrooms. Roomettes are the lowest tier of sleeper cabin accommodations on the California Zephyr. Passengers booking sleeper cabins have access to meals included with their accommodations and can choose to dine in the dining car or in their rooms.

A roomette cabin measures 23 square feet and sleeps up to two passengers with two seats and two beds. Inside a roomette cabin, two seats face each other with a fold-down table between them, and the only floor space is the gap between the two seats. Roomette cabins do not include private bathrooms, so passengers share a bathroom and shower with other sleeper cabin passengers.

A bedroom cabin measures 50 square feet and also sleeps up to two passengers. Inside a bedroom cabin, a couch and a seat face each other with a table between them. The bedroom cabin provides more floor space than the roomette cabin. Bedroom cabins include a private en suite bathroom with a sink, vanity with a built-in cabinet, and a separate enclosed toilet and shower.

Both roomette and bedroom cabins have a top bunk that pulls down from the ceiling. Each roomette and bedroom cabin has a mini closet with two hangers and a shelf for luggage storage. In a roomette cabin, the shelf is large enough to hold a backpack, while in a bedroom cabin, the shelf can hold a carry-on suitcase. Both roomette and bedroom cabins have mirrors, with the roomette mirror being shorter and thinner. The bedroom cabin mirror is a wide, full-length mirror. Passengers also have access to shared luggage storage space in the train car.
