KUMAMOTO PREFECTURE — A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday, generating the highest level of seismic intensity and triggering emergency warnings across the Kyushu region. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the tremor registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 with a depth of 10 kilometers, prompting immediate responses from government authorities and infrastructure operators.

The seismic event occurred at approximately 4:27 p.m. local time, according to data from the Japan Cabinet Office Disaster Management Division. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated the earthquake registered at the highest level, seven, on the Shindo seismic intensity scale, which measures the intensity of shaking at specific locations rather than the energy released at the source.

In response to the high intensity readings, the Japanese government issued emergency earthquake warnings for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki prefectures. The agency also issued a tsunami advisory for waves up to one meter high for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas. This advisory was later lifted as monitoring data indicated the immediate threat had passed.

Infrastructure across the island sustained visible damage from the shaking. There were at least 12 cases of collapsed houses reported in the affected areas. A rupture on the Kyushu expressway in Yatsushiro trapped vehicles, with two sections of an elevated stretch becoming misaligned. In Kumamoto prefecture, the ceiling of a large commercial facility and mall collapsed, while pillars holding a shrine also fell.

Transportation networks faced significant disruptions as operators prioritized safety checks. Rail operator JR Kyushu suspended train services around Kyushu island, including high-speed Shinkansen trains. A cargo train derailed as a result of the earthquake, further complicating logistics in the region.

Utilities monitored critical facilities for stability, with Kyushu Electric Power reporting no abnormalities at the Genkai Nuclear Power Station in Saga Prefecture or the Sendai Nuclear Power Station in Kagoshima Prefecture. The utility confirmed that radiation levels around the Genkai and Sendai nuclear power stations did not change.

International monitoring agencies assessed the risk to Pacific territories. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii or American Samoa. The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat in place for Hawaii or American Samoa.

Damage to cultural landmarks included part of the outer walls of Kumamoto Castle being damaged and a stone wall at the site collapsing. Towers at an industrial plant collapsed, and a small building caught fire.

The 2026 earthquake in southern Japan marked the first time since 2016 that a magnitude 7.0 or higher earthquake struck the Kyushu region, according to JMA records. This event reflects the seismic reality of the archipelago, which is located on the Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge. Kyushu is the third largest island of Japan, making the scale of the disruption significant for the national economy and regional stability.

The agency, established in 1956 as an independent organ of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan, has a long history of monitoring seismic activity, with its first seismic observation station established in 1880. Japan accounts for nearly 20% of global earthquakes measuring 6.0 or higher, according to the Meteorological Service Act.

The JMA's tsunami warning system underwent significant improvements following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, including enhanced early warning mechanisms and real-time communication with governmental agencies. Academic scrutiny of these systems dates back to a study titled The New Tsunami Warning System of the Japan Meteorological Agency, published in 1997 in Advances in natural and technological hazards research.

At least 50 people were injured in the earthquake.
