LONDON — BP PLC removed chairman Albert Manifold effective immediately on May 26, following a unanimous decision by the company’s board. The board cited “serious concerns related to important governance standards, oversight and conduct” as the reason for his removal.

Manifold, who had served as chairman since October of the previous year, was also removed from the board entirely. The company’s news release did not elaborate on the specific nature of the governance or conduct issues that led to his dismissal.

“Albert has helped bring a welcome focus and pace to BP’s transformation,” Amanda Blanc, senior independent director at BP, said in the release. “However, the board has been surprised and disappointed to learn of governance oversight and conduct issues it deems unacceptable and has taken decisive action.”

BP named Ian Tyler as interim chair, effective immediately. Tyler joined BP’s board in April 2025 and will serve in the role while the board begins the process to select a permanent chair.

Before joining BP, Manifold was the top executive at CRH, a global building materials company based in Dublin, for 10 years. BP, headquartered in London with its U.S. headquarters in Houston, is one of the world’s five largest oil and gas companies by revenue and operates in approximately 60 countries.
