SAN ANTONIO — The total expected cost of the San Antonio International Airport expansion and improvement project is more than $2 billion. Officials expect to secure well over $2 billion through multiple funding sources, including the $946 million in General Airport Revenue Bonds issued by the City of Antonio as part of its funding strategy for the expansion. Repayment of these bonds is supported by airport facility fees and passenger-related revenues.

The expansion project includes a new third terminal with up to 18 additional gates. The construction cost of the new third terminal is roughly $1 billion. Construction work on the new third terminal is underway, and the facility is expected to be completed by 2028.

Total enplaned passengers at Antonio Airport increased by 12.15 percent year-over-year in 2023 compared to 2022. The airport recorded 5,425,065 total enplanements in 2023. Antonio Airport currently has 27 gates and is the 43rd busiest airport in the United States by passenger traffic.

Antonio is a city in Bexar, Comal, and Medina counties in Texas with a recorded population of 1,436,697. The municipality was established in 1718 and covers an area of 1,208.777 square kilometers. The airport serves this regional hub as a key transportation infrastructure component.
