BEXAR COUNTY — The KENS 5 Weather Team issued Weather Impact Alert Days for San Antonio from Tuesday, May 19 through Sunday, May 24, citing multiple days of possible storms and heavy rain. South-central Texas faces a chance for scattered storms, gusty winds and heavier rain across the six-day window.

A Level 1-2 risk for severe thunderstorms is in place for Tuesday afternoon and evening, with threats of large hail and damaging wind gusts. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the Hill Country and the northern half of the Interstate 35 corridor, including Austin, under a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms, while southeastern areas of Central Texas have a level 1 risk.

A cold front approaching from the north will lead to widespread storms developing ahead of it Tuesday night. Active weather is expected to intensify over central Texas and the Hill Country by Tuesday evening before moving south across much of south-central Texas overnight. The storms are expected to move from northwest to southeast, arriving in Central Texas after 9 p.m. Tuesday and lasting through around 5 a.m. Wednesday. Some storms during that period could produce damaging wind gusts and hail.

Meteorologists described the incoming setup as a mesoscale convective system capable of organizing storms that produce stronger wind gusts as they move through Southeast Texas. The highest risk factors are large hail and gusty winds.

Rain chances remain elevated Thursday and Friday, with repeated rounds of rain that could lead to localized street flooding. Many areas could receive 2 to 4 inches of rain by the end of the week, while isolated spots could see 6 to 7 inches. There is a low-end potential for localized flooding from heavy downpours that could lead to isolated pockets of more than 1 inch of rain.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue through Memorial Day weekend with daily rain chances remaining in the forecast. Cooler-than-normal temperatures are expected by the weekend, with highs settling into the low 80s.

Rain chances start Sunday night into next week and continue until Wednesday, with a 30 to 50 percent chance for rain Monday through Thursday. A mild to light rain chance is forecast each day through next weekend.
