BOULDER CITY, NEV. — Water levels at Lake Mead reached 1,040.4 feet (317.1 meters) above sea level on Friday, August 7, 2026. The measurement marks the lowest point for the reservoir since it was filled approximately 90 years ago.
Data published by the US Bureau of Reclamation on Friday confirmed Lake Mead's water levels dropped to 1,040.5 feet on Thursday. This new low falls below the previous record of 1,040.58 feet recorded on July 28, 2022.
Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States and straddles the Arizona-Nevada border outside Las Vegas. The reservoir was formed in the mid-1930s when the Hoover Dam was constructed on the Colorado River. Receding water has revealed distinctive "bathtub rings" showing previous water levels on its rocky shoreline.
"Lake Mead and Lake Powell are essentially the region’s savings account, and we’ve been drawing it down for years because the river has been overallocated while enduring 25 years of persistent drought," said Kathryn Sorensen, director of research at Arizona State University’s Kyl Center for Water Policy. Combined water levels in the two reservoirs are at their lowest point in nearly seven decades. Lake Powell is the second-largest reservoir in the United States.
Lake Mead supplies water to more than 20 million people. The Colorado River is relied upon by more than 40 million people across seven U.S. states, tribal nations, and Mexico. The river irrigates more than 5 million acres of farmland and generates enough electricity to power around 700,000 homes.
Federal officials stated they will not release cool water from Lake Powell via Glen Canyon Dam to protect hydropower production. Glen Canyon Dam is located in northern Arizona. Water officials in Las Vegas were forced to pump water from deeper within Lake Mead in 2022 to continue supplying millions of people.
California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah failed to reach a long-term agreement on sharing Colorado River water. Federal officials announced a short-term proposal to address the water crisis one week prior to the record low. A separate federal plan announced July 31 could require Arizona, California and Nevada to reduce Colorado River use by up to 3 million acre-feet annually. Under the federal proposal, California, Nevada, and Arizona would share water cuts.
In July, the US Bureau of Reclamation released a 10-year operating framework for the Colorado River. The operating framework allows for collective water cuts of up to 3 million acre feet per year for lower basin states. Three million acre feet of water is enough to supply roughly 9 million average U.S. families.
Anticipated water cuts for lower basin states are around 20%. No mandatory water cuts are expected for upper basin states. The Bureau of Reclamation is expected to publish two-year operating guidelines specifying exact water cuts through 2028.
"Breaking the record is further evidence of the uncharted territory that the (Colorado River) Basin now finds itself," said Jack Schmidt, director of the Center for Colorado River Studies at Utah State University. Schmidt noted that Lake Mead has been on a downward trajectory for more than 20 years.
A spokesperson for the Bureau of Reclamation stated the agency and the Department of the Interior remain committed to reducing the risk of Lake Powell and Lake Mead falling below critical elevations. "Lake Mead’s tumble to a record low is yet another indicator of the entire Colorado River system’s precarious condition, but it’s not a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention," Porter said.
