MONTANA — A prolonged heat wave in July pushed temperatures into the 90s across western Montana and above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in portions of eastern Montana. The National Weather Service stated that the prolonged heat is rapidly drying vegetation in Montana and that eastern Montana faces the greatest immediate wildfire concern.

The heat wave has been driven by a ridge of high pressure that has settled across the Northern Rockies, bringing sustained high temperatures and accelerating the drying of grasses and other fine fuels. Some locations in Montana set new daily or all-time record high temperatures during the July heat wave. Forecasters expect warmer-than-normal conditions to persist through the remainder of July, with the Climate Prediction Center forecasting a 40 to 70 percent probability of above-normal temperatures across the state during this period.

Alex Lukinbeal, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Missoula, said the current conditions are creating a dangerous combination for fire ignition and spread. "This heat will begin to stress finer fuels, such as grasses," he said. He added that several consecutive days with temperatures approaching 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit rapidly dries grasses and other fine fuels.

"Over the next few weeks, fuels will continue drying out and fire risk will increase," Lukinbeal said. He also noted that if heating begins earlier in the season, "our fire season is going to be longer."

Although heavy rains in late June soaked forests and grasslands in western Montana, temporarily reducing wildfire threat, that moisture may now be contributing to increased fire danger. Lukinbeal stated that recent rainfall lowered Energy Release Component (ERC) values across Montana. The ERC estimates how dry vegetation has become and how intensely a fire could burn.

However, moisture from rain can lead to a bloom of fine fuels, making the landscape more combustible when drought returns. The National Weather Service is now monitoring how quickly those fuels dry during the second half of July as temperatures climb.

The current fire risk emerges against a backdrop of changing seasonal patterns across Montana. Low snowfall and an unusually warm winter left many lower- and mid-elevation slopes in the state with very little snow in spring. By the end of April, many snow monitoring stations in Montana below approximately 7,000 feet had lost nearly all of their seasonal snow. Scientists state that lower-elevation snow is particularly important because it melts gradually through spring and early summer, helping maintain soil moisture during the start of fire season.

Record-warm winters have become increasingly common. Butte experienced its warmest winter on record, with temperatures nearly 10 degrees above average, according to National Weather Service records. Missoula experienced its second warmest winter on record, averaging 7.3 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, and Kalispell recorded its fourth warmest winter on record. Scientists state that Montana’s fire risk is shaped by interactions of these record-warm winters, shrinking snowpack, spring rainfall, prolonged heat, and the timing of summer thunderstorms.

While periodic surges of monsoon moisture could bring thunderstorms to parts of Montana, these storms may be unevenly distributed. Lukinbeal stated that lightning typically starts 20 to 30 percent of Montana’s wildfires, particularly in remote wilderness areas, making the pattern of summer storms an important variable for ignition risk.

Climate experts warn that current conditions may represent a new normal. Kyle Bocinsky, director of the Montana Climate Office at the University of Montana, stated that projected increases in heat and aridity by mid-century are likely to drive longer fire seasons and more widespread smoke events. "Our peak fire season is not only going to be warmer, but also drier," he said.

Mike West, fire prevention and mitigation specialist with the Flathead National Forest, stated that smoke may become one of Montana’s biggest climate challenges even without widespread large fires. Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds of miles, meaning fires in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, or western Canada can degrade air quality across Montana. Communities far from wildfires can face health threats from particulate matter in smoke or the ozone it creates.

The current heat wave and drying vegetation are unfolding against a long-term trend of warming winters, reduced snowpack, and extended fire seasons in Montana. The combination of record-setting summer temperatures and earlier snowmelt has shortened the window of safe conditions, increasing both the likelihood and potential intensity of wildfires. Because eastern Montana is now identified as the area of greatest immediate concern, local fire response agencies and residents are being urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

Additionally, even areas not directly threatened by flames may face health impacts due to smoke drifting from regional fires. Forecasters and climate scientists emphasize that ongoing monitoring of fuel moisture and temperature trends during July—a critical month for fire development—will be essential for anticipating risks in the coming weeks.
