SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama is considering signing a contract extension for less than the maximum rookie scale value to provide the San Antonio Spurs with greater financial flexibility. On July 10, the Spurs submitted their maximum contract offer to Wembanyama.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on July 10 that Wembanyama is considering signing for less than his full five-year, $251 million maximum rookie scale extension. Wembanyama became eligible to sign his contract extension on July 6 under Collective Bargaining Agreement rules.

Wembanyama is eligible to sign a five-year contract extension worth $251 million. The potential contract extension could exceed $300 million if he qualifies for specific league honors, such as MVP, All-NBA, or Defensive Player of the Year awards. He received the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-NBA First Team selection in the recent season. Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game.

Wembanyama posted on the social media platform X, "Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes." The San Antonio Spurs finished the regular season with a 62–20 record. The Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game Western Conference Finals series before losing to the New York Knicks 4–1 in the NBA Finals. The New York Knicks won the NBA championship in 2026.

San Antonio Spurs player Devin Vassell is set to earn approximately $27 million in the upcoming season. Five other Spurs players are also set to earn $10 million or more next season.
