OXFORDSHIRE — Oxford United received a temporary transfer embargo from the English Football League on July 9, 2026, due to non-compliance with salary cost management regulations. The embargo prevents the club from acquiring summer signings and registering new players in the current window.

The EFL's salary cost management protocol regulations are financial fair play rules that stipulate limits in League One and League Two clubs regarding the proportion of turnover and funding spent on player-related costs. Oxford United was relegated from the Championship in April 2026, finishing 22nd.

In a statement, the club said: "Following relegation and with rule changes, the club have been working to align their financial position with the reporting requirements of League One." The club also indicated future plans to address financial compliance, stating: "With a commitment from shareholders to increase investment into Oxford United over the coming months, along with measures to reduce overall costs, the club will be compliant and in a strong position ahead of the January transfer window."

The club expressed confidence in its existing roster: "The club have an extremely competitive squad already in place and the focus this summer will be on retaining those players that give Aaron Ramsey and his staff the strongest group possible to deliver success on the pitch this season." Aaron Ramsey was appointed as Oxford United's head coach in late June 2026, following the sacking of former boss Matt Bloomfield three days prior.

OxVox, a supporters' trust, described the transfer embargo as "unsettling" in its own statement. "It is our understanding this embargo will be lifted as soon as the matter is resolved and that there is no fixed term," the trust said. OxVox expressed concern about the timing of the embargo: "We have often praised the owners and board for their continued funding of our club in difficult circumstances but this news is worrying and unsettling at a time when the new manager needs to be focused solely on recruitment and pre-season."

OxVox is working to gather further details and has scheduled a meeting with Dusan Bogdanovic, the new chairman of Oxford United. "We are continuing to work hard to bring more details forward and we have managed to pencil in a meeting with our new chairman Dusan Bogdanovic to discuss this and other matters," the trust said.
