NEW YORK — The New York Jets selected David Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft in late April. The team also hired Brian Duker as defensive coordinator, and General Manager Darren Mougey executed a trade with Tennessee to acquire T'Vondre Sweat.

Separately, the Jets signed Joseph Ossai, David Onyemata, and Kingsley Enagbare during free agency. The team also re-signed Jowon Briggs, who recorded four sacks in his first season with the Jets. Head Coach Aaron Glenn will call defensive plays for the team in the upcoming season.

Glenn stated that the team was building competition. "I think every player on this team knows we're building competition, and they want that because it only makes them better," Glenn said. He added, "So I don't think there's a need to tell each player, 'Oh, we drafted a guy.' Listen, those guys know we're going to do whatever we have to do to get this to be a better team."

The defensive line currently includes Harrison Phillips, Will McDonald IV, Tyler Baron, Mazi Smith, and Eric Watts.

Duker remarked on the general manager's work, stating, "Mougey has done a great job of building the front seven to the point now that we have a lot of guys that are very good players that can do a number of things." He also discussed the role of the coaching staff: "The challenge for us as a defensive staff is to always get the best 11 out there, and then we have so many guys that can do different things that give us the ability to be creative and put guys in different positions."

The New York Jets recorded the second-fewest sacks in the NFL last season and allowed opponents nearly 140 rushing yards per game. The recent personnel changes include a high draft pick, trade acquisition, free agent signings, and coaching adjustments.
