London City Lionesses announced the signing of Alexia Putellas on July 9, 2026. The move marks Putellas' transition to the English Women's Super League after her departure from Barcelona.

Putellas spent 14 years at Barcelona, where she secured four Women's Champions League titles and won two Ballon d'Or awards. Her contract with Barcelona concluded at the end of June 2026, following the club's victory over Lyon in the Champions League final on May 23, 2026. She is a Spain international and won the World Cup with her national team. At 32 years old, Putellas joins a London City Lionesses team that was promoted to the Super League in 2025.

The London City Lionesses finished sixth in their first Women's Super League season, competing in a 12-team division. The club is based in Bromley. Putellas stated, "I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses." She said, "The club's ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me." Putellas added, "I look forward to making an impact on the pitch as we challenge for titles." She also said, "Off the pitch, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to work with (owner) Michele (Kang) in elevating women's football in England and on the global stage."
