HOUSTON, TEXAS — Housing Alliance HTX closed its application period for public housing waitlists at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Approximately 56,000 applicants selected up to three waitlists for available units during this period.
These waitlists encompass multiple locations, including Kelly Village, Lincoln Park, Long Drive, Oxford Place, Bellerive, Lyerly, Independence Heights, and Irvinton Village. Housing Alliance HTX will use a random lottery system to determine which applicants are placed on these waitlists. The organization anticipates that around 10,000 of the 56,000 applicants will ultimately be placed on the waitlists.
Kelly Haines, Senior Vice President for Asset Management at Housing Alliance HTX, stated, "The sheer number of applicants demonstrates the broad need for affordable housing across Houston."
Applicants already on the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waitlist who submitted the required consent form will not participate in the lottery. Instead, these Section 8 waitlist applicants will be added to the public housing waitlists based on the date and time their completed consent form was received.
By the end of July, applicants will receive notification of their waitlist status via the email address linked to their RentCafe account. In-person assistance is available at the Housing Alliance HTX office at 2640 Fountain View. A dedicated customer service line for the public housing waitlist, 832-446-1611, will remain active until 6 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026.
