CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell agreed to a four-year, $273 million contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers on July 7, 2026. The contract includes a player option for the 2030-31 NBA season and a full trade kicker.

The trade kicker ensures Mitchell would maintain 35% of the salary cap if traded. The player option for the 2030-31 season is valued at nearly $76 million. The average annual value of Mitchell's new contract is just over $68 million. By total value, the contract is the fourth-biggest in NBA history.

Mitchell will be paid $60.1 million in the 2027-28 season, $65.8 million in the 2028-29 season, and $70.6 million in the 2029-30 season. Austin Brown, Co-Head of Basketball at CAA, negotiated the contract. Mitchell is 29 years old.

During the 2025-26 regular season, Mitchell averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game. He finished seventh in MVP voting for that season. In the 2026 NBA playoffs, Mitchell averaged 26 points per game. He averaged 27.3 points, shot 47.5% from the field, and 37.8% from 3-point range in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018, where they were swept by the New York Knicks. Mitchell expressed his commitment to the team in May 2026. "I love it here. I don't know how else to say it. I have no doubt these guys can get there. We have unfinished business," Mitchell said in an interview on May 25, 2026.

In his four seasons with the Cavaliers, Mitchell has averaged 26.7 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game. He made the All-Star team in each of those four seasons and has three top-7 finishes in MVP voting during his tenure with the team. Mitchell is a seven-time All-Star and a three-time All-NBA selection.

Koby Altman, the Cleveland Cavaliers' president of basketball operations, acknowledged Mitchell's impact. Altman noted that Mitchell's presence attracts other players to the team. "When we have a superstar of his caliber that wants to be in Cleveland, that's our best ambassador, that's our best recruiter," Altman said on May 29, 2026. "There's guys that are here that wouldn't be here without him, quite frankly."

Mitchell was drafted by the Utah Jazz with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers by the Jazz in 2022.
