EUGENE — Tate Taylor won the men's 200 meters at the 2026 Prefontaine Classic on July 4, 2026. He completed the race in 19.75 seconds, setting a new U.S. high school national record and moving to third on the all-time U20 list.

Taylor, an 18-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, achieved his record-setting time at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. He ran the 200 meters into a headwind during the competition. His previous U.S. high school national record in the 200 meters was 19.94 seconds, which he set in Texas.

In the same race, Letsile Tebogo, the reigning Olympic champion in the 200 meters, finished second with a time of 19.93 seconds. Bryan Levell, the 2025 World Championship bronze medalist in the 200 meters, also competed. "To beat the Olympic champ—I was literally telling my coach right before this, 'They cannot possibly come out here and expect me to win,'" Taylor said later.

Taylor's time of 19.75 seconds places him among the fastest U20 athletes in history for the 200 meters. Usain Bolt's best time in the 200 meters as a youth was 19.93 seconds when he was 17 years old. "I didn't even know I passed Bolt's [mark], so that's pretty cool," Taylor said.

Other U20 athletes who have run faster than 19.75 seconds include Australia's Gout Gout and Erriyon Knighton. Knighton is currently suspended. Taylor has committed to running for Texas Tech. He will not participate in the USA Outdoor Championships in New York but intends to compete in the World U20 Championships in Eugene in August 2026.
