POMEZIA — Italian police arrested four individuals on Tuesday in connection with a bomb attack that targeted journalist Sigfrido Ranucci on October 16, 2025. The Carabinieri police stated that the four suspects are strongly suspected of the offences of possessing, carrying and using explosive devices in a public place, of making threats and causing damage, with aggravating circumstances due to having acted in a group of more than five people and using mafia-style methods.

The blast occurred in Pomezia, a residential neighborhood approximately 12 miles south of Rome, and destroyed two cars belonging to Sigfrido Ranucci. The journalist had just returned home at the time of the attack, and his daughter had walked by the location a half-hour before the explosion.

Three of the suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention, while the fourth suspect is under house arrest. The detentions occurred near Naples. The Carabinieri police indicated that the bomb team is believed to have acted on orders from third parties, who have not yet been identified. The Carabinieri further stated that the masterminds tried to provide support to protect the alleged perpetrators, supplying them with funds, dedicated phone cards, legal assistance, and planning their possible escape abroad.

The investigation, which is handled by the anti-mafia prosecutor's office in Rome, involved close examination of video surveillance systems, phone records, and scientific analysis of the explosive device. Sigfrido Ranucci, host of the investigative program Report on the Rai 3 public TV station, told the ANSA news agency the day after the attack that he had received an endless list of threats. Ranucci has been under police protection since 2021. The attack on Ranucci occurred on the eighth anniversary of the car bomb slaying of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Galizia wrote about suspected corruption in political and business circles and had faced numerous libel suits.
