STUTTGART — Ben Shelton defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to win the Stuttgart Open ATP title, securing his first career victory on a grass court. This marks his sixth career title and his third of the current season.

The 23-year-old American, currently ranked fifth in the world, became the fourth male player since 2020 to win titles on hard, clay, and grass courts in a single season. Earlier this year, he won the Dallas Open in February and the Munich Open in April. He also defeated Fritz in the Dallas Open final.

Fritz served as the defending Stuttgart Open champion and had not lost a grass court final before this match. He broke Fritz's serve once in the first set and again in the third set during the 1 hour and 48 minute match. He saved nine of the 11 break points he faced.

Before the final, he played approximately five hours of tennis on Saturday, completing a delayed quarterfinal match earlier in the day. He then defeated Jiri Lehecka in the semifinals in a match that lasted almost three hours, saving two match points during that contest. He commented on his physically demanding day, stating, "I'm pretty exhausted but to play the way I did, against the quality of opponents I played, in very tight matches – and getting a win today over one of the best grass court players in the world is a huge boost for my confidence." He also said, "It gives me a lot of hope going into Halle and Wimbledon." Fritz, ranked ninth in the world, stated after the match, "It speaks to the kind of player he is, an amazing competitor." Wimbledon is scheduled to begin on June 29.
