HOUSTON — Discovery Green in Houston will close at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, after the Houston Police Department requested the early closure. The closure resulted in the cancellation of the planned Screen on the Green screening of Bend It Like Beckham and the Flea by Night event.
Police officers responded to Discovery Green around 9:20 p.m. last Saturday following reports of a large gathering of juveniles. An estimated 500 to 600 juveniles and adults had gathered in the park area. Gunshots were fired at the park while officers were clearing the location, and a second series of gunshots occurred approximately 10 to 15 minutes later. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Police detained one adult and one juvenile, both of whom were found to be in possession of firearms. More than 100 police units responded to the park and remained in the area for several hours. Houston Police Department officials stated that the police presence prevented incidents from affecting the nearby FIFA Fan Fest. Law enforcement is conducting an ongoing investigation.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said, "We love having folks enjoy our city, but everyone needs to follow the law and respect public safety. Thanks to the professionalism and training of our HPD officers, they brought the situation under control quickly and safely." Discovery Green is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026. Bumper boats and cruiser boats at the park will be available starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, and scheduled Sunday programming, including an International Day of Yoga event at 6 p.m. and a Make Music Day concert at 8 p.m., will proceed as planned.
No independent assessment of Discovery Green’s claims was available.
