ALBANY — Justin Cary, bassist for the band Sixpence None the Richer, died in Albany after being treated for a stroke and undergoing multiple surgeries. He received treatment at Albany Med following the stroke, where he underwent two surgeries and was placed in an intensive care unit on a respirator. Linda Cary was present at his bedside at the time of his death.
Cary joined the band in 1997, replacing J.J. Plasencio as the band's bassist. The band formed in 1992. In 1998, the band's track "Kiss Me" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals. The band released a cover of "There She Goes" in 1999 that also charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and in 2002, the band released the single "Breathe Your Name."
A GoFundMe campaign was created to help cover Cary's medical expenses. The campaign collected more than $38,000 from over 360 donors. Leigh Nash, vocalist for the band, described Cary following his death. Nash stated, "Justin Cary was kind, talented, and one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. I feel incredibly lucky to have known him and to have learned the touring ropes from someone so extraordinary. I was looking forward to being his friend for a long time." Nash also wrote, "‘We sure had a great time’is an understatement. Thank you, Justin. We love you forever."
