SAO PAULO — Professional soccer player Jorginho said a hotel security guard in São Paulo aggressively confronted his wife and 11-year-old daughter during breakfast, accusing the child of harassing singer Chappell Roan. The incident occurred at a hotel where Roan was staying while headlining the Lollapalooza Brazil music festival, according to his Instagram post.

Jorginho said his daughter had made a sign to take to the festival to see the singer. During breakfast, his daughter recognized Roan at a nearby table, walked past her, smiled, and returned to her seat without speaking or asking for anything, he said. The security guard then approached their table and spoke in an extremely aggressive manner to both his wife and daughter, saying the child was disrespecting or harassing other people, he said. The guard threatened to file a complaint against them with the hotel, he added.

"What happened next was completely disproportionate. A large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying that she shouldn't allow my daughter to 'disrespect' or 'harass' other people," he wrote on Instagram. "He even said he would file a complaint against them with the hotel, while my 11-year-old daughter was sitting there in tears. My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot."

Roan responded in a video on her Instagram Story, saying she was unaware of the confrontation and had not asked security to approach the family. "I didn't even see a woman and child - no-one came up to me, no-one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child," she said. "They did not come up to me. They weren't doing anything. It's unfair for security to just assume someone doesn't have good intentions when they have no reason to believe because there is no action even taken."

The singer apologized to the mother and child in her video response. "I am sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you were doing something. If you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that," she said. A representative said she did not direct her personal security or anyone on her team to interact with the mother and daughter and that she holds her teams to the highest standards with zero tolerance for aggressive behaviour towards her or her fans.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere said in a social media post that he intends to ban Roan from performing in his city. He also said Jorginho's daughter would be invited as a guest of honor to the city's Todo Mundo music festival in May.

Jorginho, who plays for Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, posted his statement in Portuguese and English to his followers on Instagram. "WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION," he wrote.
