BUDAPEST — Norris secured pole position after beating Lewis Hamilton by 0.012 seconds in qualifying. He lost the lead to teammate Oscar Piastri at the start of the 70-lap race but regained the front position through pit stop strategy before Piastri retired on lap 56 due to a gearbox failure. Norris crossed the finish line more than 10 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Max Verstappen, who started fourth. Kimi Antonelli finished third, having started seventh after receiving a three-place grid penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags during qualifying.

The result delivered McLaren Racing its 204th all-time Grand Prix victory and marked the team's third consecutive win at the Hungaroring. It was Norris's 12th career Grand Prix victory, representing his first win as a reigning Formula 1 World Champion and his first repeat win at a single circuit. Norris had not won a full Grand Prix since the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix, although he secured a sprint race victory at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix earlier in the year.

Norris attributed his performance to superior pace, tire management and confidence developed through close work with engineers. "The car was unbelievable today, well done guys, incredible. We were flying," he said.

He noted that his pace was among the best he had ever experienced. "My pace today was probably some of the best pace I've ever had. The car was beautiful to drive and I had confidence," Norris said.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella described the pole position as an overachievement resulting from execution rather than raw car superiority. "In fairness, we didn't think that would be enough to be on pole-position in Hungary, where we knew that Ferrari would definitely be the favourite," Stella said. He noted that Ferrari retained the best chassis in terms of mechanical grip, particularly in low-speed corners.

"I think Ferrari still has the best chassis in terms of grip in the corners. This is very apparent in braking," he said. He added that McLaren had improved in medium-high speed sections but still lost time in specific low-speed turns.

Stella showed Norris's development in emotional control and confidence as key factors in the victory. "Lando is much more confident. He's much more aware of his tools that he has in his driving, how to deploy these tools. And I think he's also, let me say, more in control of his emotions," he said.

He observed that Norris remained calm while trailing Piastri, which allowed him to execute the race strategy effectively. "Because today, when he was behind Oscar, he said a couple of times that he had pace in hand, but he didn't get overly frustrated. And the fact he wasn't overly frustrated, I think, then allowed him to use the pace at the right time and lead him to the victory. We've seen a great trajectory of development for Lando," he said.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton completed the top five. Hamilton received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane and had started fifth after serving a three-place grid penalty for impeding Piastri during qualifying. "Handing out penalties like crazy," Hamilton said over the radio.

George Russell finished seventh for Mercedes after experiencing a near-stall at the start that dropped him to the back of the field. Isack Hadjar finished sixth, followed by Liam Lawson in eighth, Nico Hulkenberg in ninth and Arvid Lindblad in 10th.

The race featured a tightly packed field, with 11 drivers finishing within 10 seconds of each other, the closest such spread in the 2026 season to date. Gabriel Bortoleto finished 11th, Pierre Gasly 12th, Lance Stroll 13th, Fernando Alonso 14th, Franco Colapinto 15th, Esteban Ocon 16th, Alexander Albon 17th, Carlos Sainz 18th, Oliver Bearman 19th, Sergio Perez 20th and Valtteri Bottas 21st. Sainz received a five-second penalty for colliding with Piastri while being lapped. Piastri had retired on lap 56 following the incident and a subsequent gearbox failure.

Aston Martin introduced a major upgrade package at the event, helping Fernando Alonso reach Q2 for the first time in the 2026 season despite qualifying 16th. Alonso finished 14th in the race. "It was important. Definitely, it was important for everyone in the team as it has been a tough period in both factories," Alonso said.

He stated the package improved car consistency and momentum despite not changing many positions. "Having the deficit that we had in terms of performance in the first half of the year, and this package obviously didn't change many positions, but it changed a lot the momentum of everyone in the factory," Alonso said.

Lance Stroll qualified 20th after missing second practice due to a rear suspension failure that caused him to spin off at Turn 2 during first practice. He finished 13th in the race. "Better, for sure. I think we're missing a lot on engine. So, yeah, we have to find more power. We're definitely much better on grip level, so just need to find more power," Stroll said.

He explained that a tailwind contributed to his earlier crash. "The car didn't turn in Turn 12. I checked. I think we had a 10km/h tailwind and it just went straight into the gravel. So, annoying, because I think we could have got into Q2 today," Stroll said.

James Hinchcliffe described Norris's drive as dominant and exceptional. "He was unstoppable today, wasn't he? I mean, such a dominant performance," Hinchcliffe said.

He noted that Norris had sufficient pace to execute any strategy regardless of tire offsets. "Even when he lost the lead, he had so much more pace than Oscar had even before Oscar's problems; he had the pace to do the undercut. He had the pace to do the overcut. He really had the entire field covered. Yes, the car was great. The driver today was exceptional as well, Hinchcliffe said."

Stella cautioned against viewing the win as a definitive turning point, noting that all top teams were successfully introducing upgrades due to immature regulations. I think it will be more about how many upgrades the top teams will be in condition to deliver so far and what's left for the rest of the season, because we are only midway in this season. So, I think it's far too early to say whether this is a turning point for McLaren or not," he said. Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' championship standings, holding a 50-point advantage over Hamilton and a 59-point lead over Russell."

McLaren's victory marks the team's 204th all-time Grand Prix win and extends its streak to three consecutive Hungarian Grand Prix victories. The result ends Norris's winless streak in full races since the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix and establishes him as a winner while holding the World Champion title. The tight finishing spread of 11 drivers within 10 seconds indicates competitive parity across the field midway through the season, with upgrade packages from teams like Aston Martin showing correlation improvements despite power deficits.
