LOS ANGELES — Heritage Auctions will host the Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction in Los Angeles from July 13 to July 17. The auction will feature memorabilia from film and music.
A lightsaber prop used by Mark Hamill in the 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back" will be among the items, with an opening bid set at $1 million. This lightsaber includes an attached severed hand effects rig used during filming and has not been offered at auction previously. Handwritten lyrics for the song "If I Fell," written by John Lennon on a Valentine card in New York in 1964 before a Beatles appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," will start with an opening bid of $500,000.
Other film props include a Wicked Witch of the West hat worn by Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," which has an opening bid of $100,000. A brown top hat worn by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" will start at $50,000. Boxing boots worn by Sylvester Stallone in the 1982 film "Rocky III," featuring decorative tassels and a Nike swoosh logo, will have a starting bid of $100,000.
Two carpet props from the 1998 film "The Big Lebowski" will be auctioned with opening bids of $15,000 each; one of these carpets was a prop for the character portrayed by Jeff Bridges. Hoverboards used as props in the film "Back to the Future II" will also be available. The auction will also feature a drafted screenplay for the "Godfather" sequel, a hockey jersey worn by Paul Newman in "Slap Shot," and a necklace worn by the title character in "The Bride of Frankenstein." An inflatable pillow prop of the character Otto the Autopilot from the film "Airplane" will also be included. Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, said, "This auction represents the full spectrum of entertainment history, from Hollywood's Golden Age to modern blockbuster cinema and the most influential moments in popular music."
