LOS ANGELES — The Pixar animated film Toy Story 5, distributed by Disney, is scheduled for theatrical release on June 19. Actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as the voices of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

The film centers on the characters assisting a child named Bonnie with navigating a technology-driven environment. Toy Story 5 introduces a new character named Lilypad, a digital device, and Conan O'Brien voices a character named Smarty Pants. Joan Cusack will reprise her role as Jessie, a character she has voiced for over 25 years. Other returning voice actors include Jeff Bergman as Mr. Potato Head, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, and Scarlett Spears as Bonnie. The film has received a PG rating, marking it as the first in the franchise not to receive a G rating. Andrew Stanton directed the film.

Hanks described a scene where Bonnie's feelings are hurt by a text message. "It doesn't come out of dialogue. It comes out of, like, in this particular movie, when Bonnie has her feelings hurt by what is being texted about her on her device. It broke my heart," Hanks said. He also stated that watching screenings has led to tears. "We've been looking at each other during screenings with tears in our eyes," Hanks said.

Allen commented on the emotional impact of the animation. "I don't like to say, 'Well done,' because it's sad. It just showed that animation can still grab that emotion," Allen said. He added that the film took courage and insight to create. "I thought it took courage and insight to make fun of a company, Pixar and Disney, to do what we're making fun of," Allen said.

The original Toy Story film was released in 1995. Early development concepts for that film included a marionette named Dummy and a character named Lunar Larry, who later became Buzz Lightyear. Taylor Swift contributed a song to Toy Story 5 and performed it at the world premiere.
