DORAL, FLORIDA — Bryan José Rojas Galofre and his wife were arrested at a security checkpoint near the Trump National Doral hotel in Doral, Florida, on January 27, 2025. Secret Service agents and Doral police officers stopped the couple and searched their vehicle, discovering an airsoft gun under a seat and a metal marijuana grinder in the glove compartment. Local police charged them with one count of possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use. Rojas and his wife pleaded not guilty, and the criminal case remains open.
Authorities separated Rojas from his wife after observing tattoos of a crown, a Chinese dragon, and dollar signs on his body. Rojas said, "They pulled me out of the car, they checked my tattoos, they started asking if I belonged to a gang, they took photos of me and put me under review to see if I was linked to terrorism." The Department of Homeland Security transferred him to the Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami to verify his ties to Venezuelan gangs.
Rojas is a Venezuelan immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in September 2021 and was released while his asylum application was processing. He married Socorro Zaragosa in September 2024 and began the process to adjust his immigration status through family sponsorship. Zaragosa, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen raised in Wisconsin, said, "I’m his fan. I believe Trump is a good president."
Immigration Judge Scott G. Alexander granted Rojas a $15,000 bond on April 18, 2025, determining he did not pose a danger to the community or a flight risk. Rojas was released from federal custody later that day and transferred to the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach. Regarding the trip to the hotel, Rojas said, "In the end, it was a bad decision." Tahimi Rengifo, Rojas’ attorney, said, "We are talking about young men who got tattoos without even knowing what they meant, and now they are facing serious consequences under this administration."
