CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA — Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green took part in USA Flag Football national team trials in Chula Vista, California. The 66-year-old former NFL cornerback competed for selection to the national team ahead of the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Germany.

Green qualified for the trials through USA Football's digital combine. If he performs well at the trials, he would receive an invitation to the team's training camp next month.

"There's nothing like getting on that field and competing on behalf of this country. And then topping that off standing on that top podium getting that gold [medal]. I'm a competitor just like everybody else and I'm gonna give it my best and walk away with my head up, either way," Green said.

Callie Brownson, senior director of high performance and national teams for USA Football, noted Green's qualification through the digital combine. "Darrell qualified through our digital combine. He's later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive. He's a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week," Brownson said.

Green retired from the NFL in 2002 after playing 20 seasons. He was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1983 and won two Super Bowls during his career. Green recorded 60 combined regular season and postseason interceptions and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in 2008.

Green competed in track in college and high school during his athletic career.

The 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships will be held in Germany. Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
