FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS — The New England Patriots are set to release quarterback Joshua Dobbs, according to Ian Rapoport. The Patriots planned to release Dobbs after trade negotiations did not yield a deal.

Releasing Dobbs elevated Tommy DeVito to second quarterback on the Patriots' depth chart. The Patriots signed DeVito to a two-year contract that includes guaranteed money.

If Dobbs is released, he will become a free agent. The 31-year-old quarterback signed a two-year contract in 2025 to serve as the Patriots' second quarterback.

In 2025, Dobbs served as the backup quarterback to Drake Maye on the Patriots. He appeared in four games during the 2025 NFL season, completing seven of ten passes for 65 yards.

The Patriots were the ninth NFL team that Dobbs had signed a contract with. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft.
