SAN DIEGO — Bill Self said he has not yet made a decision about his coaching future following Kansas's 67-65 loss to St. John's in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The 63-year-old coach clarified that his decision will be based on his health rather than on any on-court factors.

"I'll get back and get with family and visit and see what's going on," Self said after the game. "I love what I do, I need to be able to do it where I'm feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I'll get back home, and it'll all be discussed."

Dylan Darling scored the game-winning layup as time expired, giving St. John's a 67-65 victory over Kansas.

Self has dealt with several health-related issues in recent years. In 2023, he underwent a standard heart catheterization after complaining of chest tightness and missed that postseason. In July 2024, Self was hospitalized after experiencing some concerning symptoms and underwent a procedure to have two stents inserted into his heart two days later.

In January, Self was taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution due to being under the weather. Despite these health challenges, Self said he feels as good as he has felt in a long time.

"I'm not making any statements whatsoever," he said when pressed about his future. "When you get to be doing it as long as I've done it, I look at it in five-year increments. Now I'm probably looking at it in more two-year increments, so to speak."

Since taking over at Kansas in 2003, Self has a record of 634-167 and has won two national championships.
