DETROIT — The Boston Bruins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 in an Eastern Conference wild-card game on Saturday night in Detroit. The win moved Boston two points ahead of Detroit for the first wild-card spot.

Jeremy Swayman made 41 saves for the Bruins while John Gibson stopped 23 shots for Detroit.

Alex DeBrincat put Detroit ahead 2-1 at 4:06 of the third period. Elias Lindholm tied the game for Boston at 6:22 of the third period.

Nikita Zadorov scored the go-ahead goal at 9:42 of the third period, giving Boston a 3-2 advantage. The defenseman now has two goals this season.

Bruins' Lukas Reichel had a penalty shot attempt in the third period but John Gibson made a pad save.

Marat Khusnutdinov scored an empty-net goal with 1:52 left in the game to seal the victory for Boston.

David Pastrnak scored a goal for Boston in the contest. Lucas Raymond scored a goal for Detroit.

Morgan Geekie recorded three assists in the game for the Bruins. He has seven points in four games against Detroit this season.

The Boston Bruins will host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. The Detroit Red Wings will host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
