WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA — Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Edens said Giannis Antetokounmpo will either sign a contract extension or be traded as the star player enters the final year of his current deal. Antetokounmpo becomes eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on October 1.
"Giannis is going into the last year [of his contract]," Edens said during a 90-minute interview with co-owner Jimmy Haslam in West Palm Beach. "So one of two things will happen: Either he will be extended or he'll be traded."
"As of today, I'm a Milwaukee Buck and I'm committed to that," Antetokounmpo said. "Now what happens if things move and change in the future? That change, I can't control that."
Edens serves as the controlling owner of the Milwaukee Bucks until April 2028. Every five years, controlling ownership of the Bucks rotates among its partners.
All major decisions of the Milwaukee Bucks require consensus among its two controlling owners and its third-largest shareholder, Jamie Dinan. Haslam acquired a 25% stake in the team from Marc Lasry in 2023.
Edens and Haslam said the most important factor in deciding Antetokounmpo's future is whether he signs his contract extension. Antetokounmpo has publicly said for years that he wants to stay in Milwaukee only if the team is championship-caliber.
The Milwaukee Bucks have remained the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference this season. Antetokounmpo returned on March 2 from a calf injury that caused him to miss 15 games this season.
In late January, Peter Feigin left his position as president of the Milwaukee Bucks after serving in that role for 12 years. Josh Glessing, who works for the Haslam Sports Group and previously ran the Columbus Crew, succeeded Feigin as president.
