WEST SACRAMENTO — The New York Yankees defeated the Athletics 8-2 on Friday night at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. The victory marked the Yankees’ fifth consecutive win.

Paul Goldschmidt opened the scoring with a three-run home run in the first inning against Athletics starter Luis Severino. Aaron Judge followed with an RBI single in the same inning after falling behind 0-3 in the count, and Ben Rice reached base on an error by Nick Kurtz before later hitting a home run of his own. Rice’s home run tied him with Judge for the team lead at 17 each.

Severino exited the game before the second inning after grimacing during warmup pitches, leaving with a sore right arm. He had already allowed four unearned runs in the first inning. Severino fell to 0-3 in four career starts against the Yankees, having allowed 19 total runs—15 earned—over 13 2/3 innings in those appearances.

Carlos Rodon started for the Yankees and pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits. Fernando Cruz entered with the bases loaded in relief and induced an inning-ending double play. Cruz has stranded 20 of 24 inherited runners this season.

Nick Kurtz hit a solo home run for the Athletics, who have lost four straight games on their homestand. The Athletics have been outscored 30-6 during that stretch. Their starting pitchers are 0-9 with a 5.64 ERA over the team’s last 13 games without a win.

The Yankees have outscored their opponents 36-6 during their current five-game winning streak. Goldschmidt is batting .304 (24-for-79) with a .952 OPS over his last 23 games and is hitting .350 (7-for-20) with 14 RBIs with runners in scoring position this season. The game drew a sellout crowd of 12,254. Ryan Weathers is scheduled to start Saturday’s game for the Yankees against J.T. Ginn.
