ESCONDIDO — Kerry George Sheron, a 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran, died in a hospital on 24 May after being assaulted outside his home in Escondido, California, on 20 May. Escondido police responded to a report of the assault just after 14:00 local time that day.

Sheron was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and died four days later. A bystander who intervened during the assault was also injured. Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was arrested a few blocks away after allegedly fleeing on foot and was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse, making criminal threats, and battery.

Butler pleaded not guilty in court before Sheron’s death, and charges against him could be amended following the death. He is being detained without bail and is due back in court on 3 June. The case is being presented to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, which is reviewing whether to amend charges.

Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia described the attack as unprovoked and occurring in broad daylight. "It was a single punch to the jaw," Garcia told reporters on Friday. In a separate statement, he added, "The victim then falls to the floor, and there are subsequent hits to the victim's head area."

Sheron’s home was known for its elaborate display of American flags, military insignias, and pro-Trump and MAGA decor, which had been on display for years despite prior incidents of vandalism. According to his longtime friend Jim Gillie, Sheron would say, "They have a right to freedom of speech, and so do I." Gillie also said, "Kerry was a Trump supporter, but he was a patriot first, and when people would come and spew anti-Trump stuff at him, he didn't let it bother him."

Escondido Police Lieutenant Lee Stewart said detectives are evaluating all potential motives, including whether the incident may have had a political component. However, he noted they "have not developed evidence to support that conclusion" regarding a political motive. The cause and manner of Sheron’s death are pending determination by the medical examiner.
