KYIV — Russia attacked Kyiv with missiles and drones overnight Sunday, with damage recorded across at least nine districts of the Ukrainian capital and at least 10 people injured, according to local authorities. The strikes shook buildings across the city center, including near government offices, residential buildings and schools.

Air raid sirens sounded throughout the night and smoke billowed across the city from the strikes. Powerful explosions were heard near the city center and close to government buildings. The attack was ongoing by sunrise Sunday, with more missiles and drones expected to reach Kyiv.

A school building in the Shevchenko district was damaged while people were sheltering inside, according to a statement by the mayor. Supermarkets and warehouses across the city were also damaged, according to local authorities, and damage was recorded in multiple communities throughout the Kyiv region, according to the regional governor. The figure on districts affected was reported in a Telegram post by Tymur Tkachenko.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was planning to use the hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, citing intelligence from the U.S. and Western partners. Ukraine's Air Force also warned of a possible launch of the Oreshnik missile. It was not immediately clear if the Oreshnik had been used in the overnight attack.

Russia first used the multiple-warhead Oreshnik missile on the city of Dnipro in November 2024, and again in January in the western Lviv region. The name of the weapon means "hazelnut tree" in Russian.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the weapon is immune to any missile defense system, and that several such missiles, even fitted with conventional warheads, could be as devastating as a nuclear strike. "The Oreshnik streaks at 10 times the speed of sound, or Mach 10, and is capable of destroying underground bunkers 'three, four or more floors down,'" Putin said.
