NEW JERSEY — NORAD F-16 fighter jets intercepted three general aviation aircraft that violated temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster and East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday. NORAD aircraft deployed flares during two of the three intercepts to draw the pilots' attention.

Ten general aviation aircraft entered the restricted airspace over the two municipalities on the same day. All intercepted aircraft were safely escorted out of the restricted airspace by NORAD aircraft following the intercepts.

The airspace violations occurred during the 2026 World Cup final match, which was hosted at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. President Trump, Spain's royal family, Mexico's president, Canada's prime minister, and Hollywood celebrities attended the final match.

NORAD routinely issues temporary flight restriction zones for President Trump's Bedminster retreat and his property at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida. General aviation planes are defined as non-commercial aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration issues temporary flight restrictions and communicates them to pilots through Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs). Temporary flight restrictions prohibit entry into certain airspaces without permission for a given period and apply to drones.

Violating temporary flight restrictions can result in sanctions, warnings, fines, or suspensions. The enforcement actions taken on Sunday followed a similar incident last month when an F-16 fighter jet intercepted a civilian plane flying through restricted airspace over Hagerstown, Maryland.

"Flares are employed with the highest regard for safety, burn out quickly and completely, and pose no danger to people on the ground," NORAD said in a statement. "Should NORAD aircraft intercept a general aviation aircraft, the pilot should immediately come up on frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and turn around to reverse course until receiving additional instructions on one of those frequencies," NORAD stated.

The defense command also issued a reminder to aviators operating in the region. "Pilots: check your Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions," NORAD posted.

The presence of world leaders and dignitaries at the World Cup final necessitated strict airspace controls over both the stadium vicinity and the presidential retreat in Bedminster.

These restrictions are part of established protocols for protecting designated individuals and large public events. The use of flares and fighter jets demonstrates the operational readiness of NORAD to respond to unauthorized incursions, while the subsequent escort of the aircraft ensured no further escalation occurred within the restricted zones.
