HOBART, TASMANIA — A living Australian brushtail possum appeared among plush toy animals on a display shelf at a gift shop in the departure terminal of Hobart Airport in Tasmania on Wednesday. A browsing passenger first spotted the possum peering out from among kangaroo plush toys on the display shelf.
The possum's big brown eyes were moving as it sat alongside the stuffed animals. On the shelf above the possum were bilby and dingo plush toys, while Tasmanian devil plush toys were displayed beside the possum in the kangaroo section.
A staff member took a video of the possum with her phone after the discovery. The possum left the shop after becoming wary of the attention, and airport staff removed the possum from the airport unharmed.
Airport retail manager Liam Bloomfield said on Thursday that the possum had been spotted on Wednesday. "I'm imagining it saw some of the plush animals that were for sale on the shelf and it decided to make its home with those. It wanted to blend in," Bloomfield joked.
It is unknown how the possum entered the store or how long it spent there among the stuffed animals before being discovered by the passenger.
