Los Angeles County prosecutors charged Gabriela Gonzalez with attempting to hire a hitman on the dark web to kill Jack Avery, a member of the boy band Why Don't We, as part of a custody dispute over their 7-year-old daughter. She was charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of solicitation of murder.

Francisco Gonzalez and Kai Cordrey face the same charges. If convicted, all three face up to life in prison.

"This is a case where the defendants are accused of going to great lengths to find someone to commit murder," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. The charges stem from events that prosecutors say unfolded over the course of more than a year.

Between 2020 and 2021, Gabriela Gonzalez sought Cordrey's help to hire someone to kill Avery, according to prosecutors. In April 2021, Francisco Gonzalez allegedly sent $10,000 to Cordrey as front money for the plot. Two months later, Cordrey requested and received an additional $4,000 from Francisco Gonzalez.

In September 2021, an undercover law enforcement officer posing as a hitman spoke with Cordrey about the murder-for-hire plot. Cordrey told the undercover officer that Avery was the target and discussed payment terms and proof of death.

The FBI initiated the investigation and eventually turned it over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors announced the charges on Thursday.

As of Thursday, Gabriela Gonzalez was held in a Los Angeles-area detention facility on $2 million bond. Francisco Gonzalez was arrested in Florida and was being held in the Seminole County jail awaiting extradition. Cordrey was arrested Thursday and his bail was set at $2 million. Jail records did not list an attorney for Cordrey.

Avery thanked prosecutors and law enforcement for their support and said his focus is on being the best father he can be. Gonzalez has more than 450,000 followers on Instagram.
