NEW YORK CITY — The Fashion Auctioneer sold seven authenticated pieces from Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wardrobe in March, generating $408,750 and selling every lot. The sale set a world record for any garment connected to Bessette Kennedy when her camel Prada coat sold for $192,000, more than six times its high estimate.

All seven authenticated pieces were originally gifted to RoseMarie Terenzio by Bessette Kennedy. Terenzio, John F. Kennedy Jr.'s longtime assistant and one of the couple's closest friends, parted with pieces she no longer wore in the hope that they would find an appreciative home and donated a portion of the auction proceeds to Hearts of Gold, a nonprofit supporting homeless mothers and their children.

The auction was handled by auctioneer Lucy Bishop. Bishop first contacted Terenzio after recalling an interview in which Terenzio said she owned some of Bessette Kennedy's clothes. "It really was a mix between fans and fashion-loving women, but also really serious private collectors, museums and institutions," Bishop said.

The sale also included twenty vintage garments from an anonymous collector who acquired the garments from an eBay seller in 2017. The eBay seller claimed the garments were originally obtained from a staffer at George magazine, though Bishop was unable to verify the chain of custody for the garments, as noted in the auction catalog.

A Prada skirt and boots estimated at $2,000 to $3,000 sold for $30,000 at the sale. The two camel Prada coats in the sale were passed to Michele Ammon before the sale, not kept in Terenzio's possession.

"Come down, and we'll pick something out for you," Terenzio recalled Bessette Kennedy saying. "She wanted you to feel good in your clothes. She always inspired confidence in people."

"Carolyn could be sentimental about a plastic ring you bought her at a flea market, and she would treasure it because you thought about her and it came from you," Terenzio said. "It wasn't really about a price tag. It was more about just her spirit."

According to Terenzio, Bessette Kennedy did not have a large wardrobe but wore items repeatedly. Bessette Kennedy shopped for T-shirts in the Gap's kids' section and at Pearl River as well as at designers Yohji Yamamoto, Charivari, Bagutta, and Linda Dresner.

The sale coincided with the airing of the FX series "Love Story." Several garments from the anonymous collector were loaned to the series and worn by Sarah Pidgeon portraying Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.
