Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham was diagnosed with a left lung pneumothorax after colliding with Washington Wizards guard Tre Johnson while diving for a loose ball during the first quarter of a game. The team ruled Cunningham out for at least two weeks and said he will be reevaluated in two weeks, according to a team statement.

Cunningham remained in the game for just over a minute after the collision before leaving at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter. The team initially said Cunningham was suffering from back spasms, according to a team statement.

After further testing, Cunningham was diagnosed with a collapsed lung, which was identified as a left lung pneumothorax, according to a team statement. The Pistons listed Cunningham as out for a game in Washington with a left back contusion, according to an injury report.

Cunningham is averaging 24.5 points and 9.9 assists per game in 61 games this season. The guard was drafted first overall by the Detroit Pistons in 2021 and has been selected as an NBA All-Star in each of the past two seasons.

Cunningham needs to play at least four more games this season to meet the 65-game threshold for eligibility for All-NBA team and MVP consideration. The Pistons will wrap up their regular season on April 12 against the Indiana Pacers, and the NBA playoffs begin on April 18.

The Detroit Pistons have a 3.5-game lead over the Boston Celtics atop the Eastern Conference standings. The Pistons defeated the Washington Wizards 130-117 in the game in which Cunningham was injured.
