MISSOURI CITY, TEXAS — The Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Constable's Office captured an 11-foot alligator in the Benbrook community of Missouri City, Texas, and posted a photo of the capture on Wednesday. According to a post by the office, the alligator was being relocated to its natural habitat.

The reptile had been roaming the Benbrook community over the weekend before it was apprehended. Earlier on Sunday morning, a large alligator was spotted walking along Camp Sienna Trail in Sienna.

Trenae Hill was in a car with her four-year-old son when they spotted the alligator on Sunday morning. Hill shared photos and videos of the animal, including footage in which her son described it. Megan Pederson also shared photos of the alligator with KHOU 11 and said it was the biggest she had seen in Sienna.

The sightings followed other recent encounters in the area. A gator was spotted at an elementary school in Sienna the previous week, and another was seen on a golf course in Sienna before that. A gator was also seen wandering the streets in Cinco Ranch.

Gator season and nesting season continue through the end of May. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, most alligators naturally avoid people and will usually retreat when approached. If an alligator hisses, it is a warning that a person is too close and they should slowly back away, the agency advises.

Alligators basking near ponds or streams are often just regulating their body temperature and are not necessarily hunting, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. Any alligator that approaches people, comes out of the water toward humans, or lingers near homes could be considered a nuisance animal.

Pet owners are urged to keep animals leashed and away from the water because alligators may see them as an easy food source. People should never attempt to move an alligator seen in a roadway and should instead contact local authorities. Feeding alligators is illegal in Texas and can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans.
