INDIANAPOLIS — A 12-year-old boy was left stranded roughly 10 miles from his home in Indianapolis on Wednesday after his Uber Teen ride was canceled mid-trip, and local police confirmed they are investigating. The boy had been booked into the ride-hailing service by his mother after his school bus failed to arrive.

The mother, Geralyn Alexander, said in an interview that she used Uber's teen ride option to get her son to his middle school after the school bus did not show up. About 11 minutes into the trip, she received a notification that the ride had been canceled. At that point, the boy was roughly 10 miles from his home and traveling in the wrong direction, away from the school.

Alexander tracked her son's location using Apple's AirTag tracking technology and saw that he was not near the school. During a FaceTime call placed while the boy was still in the vehicle, the driver said the school was not the address listed in the app. The driver also did not match the profile photo displayed in the app and did not respond when the boy repeatedly asked where he was being taken.

Alexander then called 911. Shortly after that call, the driver let the boy out of the car and drove away.

"I've been crying since Wednesday, because I felt like I could not protect my child," Alexander said. "I'm going to do everything that I can to make sure whoever did this is held accountable," she added.

An Uber spokesperson addressed the incident in a statement. "We can't imagine how terrifying this experience must have been and are continuing to look into this report. We stand ready to assist law enforcement with its investigation," the spokesperson said.

Uber policy states that riders using teen accounts must be at least 13 years old. The boy at the center of Wednesday's incident was 12. The driver's identity and the reason the trip was canceled have not been released.
