EAST LANSING — The East Lansing Police Department on Friday released body camera footage showing officers fatally shooting Michigan State University senior Isaiah Kirby during an April 15 confrontation. The release marked the first time video of the gunfire was shown publicly.

The footage showed Kirby running toward officers in the middle of the road while holding a knife as they drove to the scene at Lake Lansing and Abbot roads. Officers had been called on a theft report that evolved into a stabbing by a suspect and then into an officer-involved shooting, the department has said.

Video showed officers firing an initial hail of gunfire at Kirby as he approached. He then appeared on his knees, screaming in agony, as officers ordered him to drop the knife. Police fired two additional volleys, with the first and last shots coming about 17 seconds apart.

Kirby, 21, was a Maryland native and a senior at Michigan State University. His family was shown heavily redacted footage the week before the public release.

"Where's my truth? Where's my transparency?" Karyn Kirby said. "That's all I ask. It's not that hard, right?"

East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown addressed the department's role as the investigation continues. "I want to thank the officers and employees of the East Lansing Police Department for their continued professionalism during this investigation," Brown said. "Furthermore, I want to thank the East Lansing community for their patience and understanding as this investigation proceeds."

The department identified the four officers involved as field training officer Beck Martin, officer Brennan Surman, officer Benjamin Saylor, and officer Zane Johnson Chasteen. Martin had three years on the job, Surman had two years, and Saylor had one year. Chasteen had been on the job for three months and was paired with Martin.

The Michigan State Police are continuing to investigate the use of force by the East Lansing officers, officials said. The department has not announced a timeline for when that investigation will conclude.
