WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Washington, D.C. school bus driver won the $5 million top prize in the Maryland Lottery's LUXE scratch-off game after purchasing the ticket at a 7-Eleven store in Hyattsville, Maryland. Maurice Williams claimed the first of three $5 million top prizes available in the game, leaving two unclaimed.

Williams stopped at the 7-Eleven to cash in a $50 prize, used those winnings to buy another ticket, and sat in his car to play. When he scanned the scratch-off, he learned he had won the LUXE game's top prize.

"I didn't notice I had a matching number at first, until I scanned it," Williams said. "It's crazy because the matching number was 59 and I just turned 59 the other day."

Williams described his reaction after realizing the ticket was a winner. "I just sat there stuck, I mean, I couldn't believe it," he said. "I had to get my head straight."

Williams called his mother first with the news, then returned to work. On his lunch break, he scheduled an appointment to claim the prize.

Williams plans to buy his mother a house with his winnings. He has not decided how he will spend the remainder of the money.

The LUXE scratch-off game launched in February with three $5 million top prizes available. Williams is a school bus driver in Washington, D.C., and purchased the winning ticket during a routine stop to redeem a smaller prize. The 7-Eleven store in Hyattsville that sold the winning ticket receives a $5,000 bonus from lottery officials.
