Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore tackled an armed former student inside the Oklahoma school last month and was shot during the struggle, while no other students or faculty were injured. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old former student Victor Hawkins, was arrested at the school and is facing multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill.

Moore, 60, said the day began normally before he heard a gunshot outside his office. He rushed toward the gunman, saying his 37 years of training and drills gave way to instinct in the moment.

"We fell on the padded bench area, and he just started emptying the gun into the floor," Moore said. He did not initially realize he had been shot, and only after standing up did he feel the warmth of his blood and recognize he had been hit.

Among the first responders who arrived were people Moore knew personally, including his MediFlight nurse, firemen, police officers, and former students. He said seeing familiar faces rather than strangers was comforting.

"I can't explain why I did what I did," he said. "I think many, many people would have done the same thing. They just don't realize it."

Moore has received thank-you letters from around the world, including one from a family who lost a child in a school shooting. Students at Pauls Valley High School crowned him this year's prom king.

More than $20,000 was donated to a GoFundMe page for Moore, who redirected the funds to the "Principal Kirk Moore Fund" at the school, which supports graduates. Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores, OERB, The People of Oklahoma Oil and Natural Gas, and Hobby Lobby are donating a combined $50,000 to the fund.

Moore described the donations as money that will serve as a graduation gift for students who completed their schooling. Hawkins pleaded not guilty and remains in custody on $1 million bond. Moore said he never had Hawkins in his office for disciplinary reasons and said he believes Hawkins was in a bad situation at the time.
