Denver International Airport on Sunday released security video showing a Frontier Airlines Airbus A321 striking and killing a trespasser on a runway during a takeoff attempt at 11:19 p.m. Friday. The city and county of Denver's Aviation Department released the footage in response to a public records request.

The black-and-white video shows a figure approaching a runway and beginning to cross it at walking pace as the Airbus A321 swept in from the left. The person vanished from view and one of the plane's engines caught fire. The surveillance footage shows the victim was aligned with one of the plane's engines when part of their upper body was drawn inside. The collision occurred roughly two minutes after the individual hopped the perimeter fence and reached the tarmac.

The aircraft was moving rapidly down the runway, en route to takeoff for a scheduled flight to Los Angeles International Airport. The plane was traveling at 139 mph at the time of the crash, according to FlightAware. It was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members.

Frontier Airlines said smoke entered the aircraft's cabin as the flight was aborted. All 224 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated.

Passenger Nikil Thalanki said he felt the aircraft begin to lift for takeoff when the collision occurred. "We immediately came back down, and there was fire on the engine," Thalanki said. "Smoke filled the cabin, completely. It was super hard to breathe." He said passengers and crew were evacuated using inflatable evacuation slides.

Twelve people reported minor injuries and five were taken to hospitals. Airport CEO Phil Washington said the person who was killed was a trespasser, and airport officials said the person did not appear to be an employee of the airport. The airport said it will review security along its roughly 36 miles of perimeter fencing.

Ryann Money, spokesperson for the Denver Medical Examiner's Office, said by email that the person's name and details on the cause and manner of death will be released once the investigation is complete and next of kin have been notified.

A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said the agency was gathering information about the collision. The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating.
