SAN ANTONIO — The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the San Antonio Spurs 104-102 in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal series in San Antonio. Julius Randle led Minnesota with 21 points, and Anthony Edwards added 18 off the bench in his return from a left knee injury.

Edwards sustained a bone bruise on April 25 that had been expected to keep him out for multiple weeks. He came off the bench in Game 1 and scored 11 of the Timberwolves' first 19 points in the fourth quarter.

"We talked yesterday that if he was able to go, he was going to come off the bench, and if that, you know, was fine with him. He was all in, and he did a really good job of not like pushing and forcing things, even though he knew he was on a minutes restrictions. I thought he did a really good job of just staying in the flow," Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

San Antonio led by three points after three quarters. The Timberwolves went on a 7-0 run capped by a Mike Conley three-pointer with 4:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 95-86 lead.

Victor Wembanyama's dunk with 43.6 seconds left cut the margin to four points, and Dylan Harper's steal and layup with 30.9 seconds remaining brought the Spurs within a bucket. After a Randle missed shot at the end of the game, the Spurs did not call a timeout before Julian Champagnie's buzzer-beating three-point attempt rimmed out.

"Dylan did a good job pushing the ball and kicking it ahead. Julian had a fly-by and had a shot in rhythm. No problem with the shot," San Antonio Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.

Jaden McDaniels and Terrence Shannon Jr. each scored 16 points for Minnesota. Naz Reid and Conley each added 12 points, while Randle and Rudy Gobert each grabbed 10 rebounds.

Harper led the Spurs with 18 points. Stephon Castle and Champagnie each scored 17, Devin Vassell had 14 and Keldon Johnson added 11. Wembanyama recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocked shots despite going 0-for-8 on three-point attempts.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday in San Antonio. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Minneapolis on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
