LONDON — Arsenal will host Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal at the Emirates Stadium in London on Tuesday at 8pm (19:00 GMT). The first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium ended 1-1, with both goals coming from the penalty spot.

Viktor Gyokeres converted a first-half penalty for Arsenal in the first leg, before Julian Alvarez equalized 10 minutes into the second half from the spot after Ben White was penalized for handball. A late penalty appeal was overturned on VAR review after David Hancko made contact with Eberechi Eze in the penalty area, and Eze was also clipped inside the box earlier without a spot-kick being awarded.

The winner of the tie will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final on May 30. Neither Arsenal nor Atletico Madrid has won the European Cup or Champions League. Arsenal reached the final in 2006 and lost 2-1 to Barcelona, while Atletico reached the final in 2014 and again in 2016, losing to Real Madrid on both occasions.

"We are in an incredible position – the semifinal of the Champions League. We have to play in front of our people. It's in our hands," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

Gyokeres pointed to the role of the home crowd at the Emirates. "We know when we play at home with our fans, it's going to be different, for sure. We just have to do our job, be at our best, and it's going to be a good game at home," the Arsenal striker said.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone reflected on the atmosphere in the first leg. "Rarely have we seen such enthusiasm from the fans as we had at the start of the first leg," he said.

Arsenal will be without Jurrien Timber, who is still recovering from a groin injury, and Mikel Merino, who remains sidelined after foot surgery. Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz are expected to be fit. Bukayo Saka, who has been nursing an Achilles injury in recent months, scored and assisted Gyokeres in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Fulham before being withdrawn at half-time by Arteta.

For Atletico, Alvarez hobbled off in the second half of the first leg but is set to start. Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez have been ruled out with thigh injuries, while Giuliano Simeone, Alexander Sorloth and Jose Gimenez face late fitness tests.

The two clubs have met four times in European competition, with one win each and two draws. Arsenal beat Atletico 4-0 in the Champions League group stage on October 21. In the 2018 Europa League semifinal, the sides drew 1-1 on April 26 before Atletico won the second leg 1-0 on May 3.
