MIAMI GARDENS — Kimi Antonelli won the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, claiming his third consecutive victory and extending his lead in the world championship. The 19-year-old Italian started from pole position for the third straight race, lost the lead at the start, then regained it and held off Lando Norris in the closing laps.

The race start was moved up by three hours to 1 p.m. local time due to a threat of thunderstorms later in the afternoon. Norris finished second and Oscar Piastri finished third. Antonelli's teammate George Russell came in fourth, the third straight race in which Antonelli has finished ahead of the 28-year-old Briton, who entered the 2026 season as the betting-odds favorite to win the title.

"This is just the beginning. The road is still long, but we're working super hard, and the team is doing an incredible job, and without them, I wouldn't be here," Antonelli said after the race. He became Formula 1's youngest ever championship leader in March and is in his second season in the sport.

After the Miami Grand Prix, Antonelli had 100 championship points, Russell 80, Charles Leclerc 63 and Norris 51. A Grand Prix victory awards 25 points.

"I'm gutted to miss out on a win here in Miami. I think it was possible today, but yeah, not the pace to get back past him in the end. So we take it on the chin. But it's still a positive weekend altogether," Norris said.

Leclerc finished sixth after spinning on the last lap and losing multiple positions in the final corners. "I think that without the mistake, I could have done a podium. I wanted to get the overtake from Oscar in that last lap," Leclerc said.

The Miami Grand Prix was the fourth race of the 2026 Formula 1 season, which had an unplanned five-week gap after two races in the Middle East were canceled because of the war in Iran. It was also the first U.S. race since new Formula 1 rules led to major changes in the sport, with the regulations tweaked in response to criticisms that the sport had devalued flat-out racing in favor of battery management.
