SAN DIEGO — Jamie Ernesto Alvarez-Gonzalez pleaded guilty in federal court in San Diego to one count of impersonating a federal agent and three counts of illegally possessing firearms, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California. The plea stems from a January 8 incident in which he followed a Border Patrol agent through a San Diego neighborhood.
Alvarez-Gonzalez drove a black Ford F-150 outfitted to resemble a federal vehicle, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California. The truck bore a license plate frame reading "federal truck" in small letters, with the word "federal" misspelled. A Border Patrol sticker was affixed to the windshield, non-working radio communications antennae were installed on the roof, and handcuffs hung from the rearview mirror. He also possessed a fake FBI badge, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The Border Patrol agent who was being followed aborted his mission after spotting Alvarez-Gonzalez, falsely believing that other agents were responding to assist him, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California.
When confronted by actual federal agents, Alvarez-Gonzalez shouted obscenities and demanded that the agents leave the community of Linda Vista, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California. Three other vehicles then arrived, harassed the departing agents and chased them onto the highway.
Alvarez-Gonzalez made a recording in which he said he was actively looking for federal agents working on immigration enforcement and had brought in his "reinforcements," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California. In the recording, he stated that he was seeking out agents conducting immigration enforcement operations in the area.
Alvarez-Gonzalez overstayed a tourist visa that he had used decades ago to enter the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California.
