BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora on Saturday, along with hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, third-base coach Kyle Hudson and assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson. Game-planning coach Jason Varitek is being reassigned to another role within the organization. Triple-A skipper Chad Tracy will take over the big league manager job on an interim basis.

The Red Sox began the season with a 10-17 record and sit in last place in the American League East. Boston's on-base plus slugging percentage this season is .667, ranking 26th in Major League Baseball, and the team has hit 18 home runs, tied with the San Francisco Giants for the lowest total in baseball. Boston's team earned run average is 4.44, ranking 21st in MLB.

"Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude," Red Sox owner John Henry said.

Cora's Red Sox managerial tenure lasted eight seasons. In his first season in 2018, he led the team to a franchise-record 108 wins and a World Series championship. He agreed to leave his managerial post two years later after his alleged role in the Houston Astros' 2017 sign-stealing scandal, and the Red Sox re-hired him in 2021. Under Cora, Boston lost to the New York Yankees in the wild-card round last season. He finished his Red Sox managerial career with a 619-541 record.

Among position players this season, Roman Anthony has a .686 OPS, Marcelo Mayer has a .661 OPS, and Jarren Duran has a .549 OPS. Veteran shortstop Trevor Story has a .198/.235/.297 slash line.

On the pitching staff, Garrett Crochet has a 6.30 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP through six starts. Ranger Suarez, who signed a five-year, $130 million contract with the Red Sox, has a 4.00 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP this season.
